I left the house a little late this week. My son needed a ride to school and it was real hard to get motivated for some reason. I know the need for my ministry is large, sometimes there is something in me that just makes it hard to go downtown. I drove up about 30 minutes late and I felt horrible. There were about 20 guys waiting on me and there was Connie. Connie, from The Austin Stone Community Church, has been helping me serve the guys for about a month now. She spent 30 minutes visiting with the guys before I showed up but then had to rush out and get to school. Connie made hard boiled eggs and passed them out while she waited. I was in class last week, so Connie was the only one to show up down there. I am lucky to have her help so I really want to make sure I get downtown on time.
Mark, one of my homeless friends, was late this week. He came by at the end and said "Are you coming or going?" I gave him some coffee and some foot powder. We chatted for a bit then I left. I had several sandwiches left over so I decided to pass them out at a local church near the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH). I saw about 6 people near the front door of the church, so I started passing the sandwiches out. "Thanks Brian" they said, as most of them know me from the park. I soon realized the several people by the front door was a line that wrapped around the corner and down the street. I saw a bunch of familiar faces. This made me wonder, maybe Friday's are not the best days for me to server. I am considering changing my days to better accommodate the crowd and better serve the needs of those who are homeless.
